The essentials

1. Paracetamol for fever and pain · 2. ORS sachets for dehydration · 3. An antacid for acidity · 4. An antihistamine like cetirizine for allergies · 5. Antiseptic cream for cuts · 6. A pain-relief gel for sprains · 7. Adhesive bandages and gauze · 8. A digital thermometer · 9. Cough syrup · 10. Your family's regular prescription medicines with a copy of each prescription.

Storage matters

Keep the kit in a cool, dry place — not the bathroom or kitchen, where heat and moisture degrade medicines. Store everything in original packaging so batch numbers and expiry dates stay visible, and always out of children's reach.

Check it twice a year

Set a reminder to clear out expired items every six months and restock what's running low. Expired medicines can be ineffective or unsafe.

Know when a kit is not enough

Home remedies are for minor, short-lived complaints. High fever beyond 2 days, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or any symptom in an infant needs a doctor — not another dose.
