A surprising gap

Despite abundant sunshine, a large majority of Indians are vitamin D deficient — indoor lifestyles, pollution and sunscreen all reduce the skin's ability to make it.

Why it matters

Vitamin D drives calcium absorption for bones and teeth, supports immunity and muscle function, and low levels are linked with fatigue and body aches that often go unexplained.

Sun, food, supplement

Aim for 15–20 minutes of midday sun on bare arms a few times a week. Food sources (fatty fish, egg yolk, fortified milk) help but rarely suffice. If a blood test confirms deficiency, doctors commonly prescribe a weekly vitamin D3 60,000 IU dose for 8–12 weeks — take it after a meal containing some fat for better absorption.
